I Was Told I'd Never Heal from PCOS—Here's What I Use for Hair, Skin, Body, Laundry, and Cleaning

From struggling with PCOS to thriving. These clean, hormone-safe swaps for hair, skin, laundry & cleaning helped me balance my hormones & clear my skin.

After a decade of painful side effects from birth control—

intense skin issues, gut dysbiosis, anxiety, and hopelessness—

I began to heal by turning to God, whole food nutrition, and reducing the toxic load in my body and home.

#PCOSawarenessMonth

When I was diagnosed with the "worst case" of PCOS my OB-GYN had ever seen, I felt broken. He told me birth control pills were the “only” solution if I want to live a fulfilling life and one day have kids. After 10 years of experiencing my body decline while on the pill, I finally chose to be brave and follow the Lord’s guidance vs that of the MDs.

While the road has been tough, I’m grateful.

What the pharmaceuticals did to my brain, body, gut & skin… is the reason I’m in this space and passionate about providing non-toxic living tips every day.

While there’s no one-size-fits-all fix for PCOS, removing hormone disruptors from my personal care and cleaning routine was a major piece of my healing puzzle.

If you’re newly diagnosed, overwhelmed, or wondering where to start: this list is for you. Every swap matters—and these are the exact products I use daily, and why I trust them.

Note: Some of the links below are affiliate links, which means I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only share what I genuinely love and use in my own home.

Favorite Non-Toxic Swaps List

🧴 HAND, BODY & DISH WASH

I use: @branchbasics concentrate, diluted into foaming pump bottles for hand & body soap and dishwashing.
(I used to use their dishwasher tablets but no longer have a dishwasher)

Why I love it: One bottle goes a long way—it’s plant-based, cost-effective, and free from synthetic fragrances, dyes, sulfates, and endocrine disruptors. It's gentle enough for my eczema-prone kids and strong enough for our dishes.

Here’s the thing: dish soap residue lingers—even after rinsing. If the product you’re using contains questionable ingredients, you're potentially ingesting hormone-disrupting chemicals with every bite. For me, that’s a hard no—especially when managing PCOS or aiming for low-tox living.

🧠 PCOS tip: The skin is our largest organ, and what touches it (or ends up on what we eat) gets absorbed into the body. Choosing a genuinely clean, multi-purpose soap like Branch Basics helps reduce my daily exposure to endocrine disruptors—without over complicating our routine.

Branch Basics soap wash– clean, fragrance-free product for hormone health and PCOS

For Travel: dilute 1 tsp @BranchBasics concentrate in < 2 oz water in travel size foam soap dispenser.
We never leave the home without Branch Basics Foaming Hand Soap.

🧺 LAUNDRY CARE

I use: @Truly Free Laundry Wash + OxyBoost
(Read why I switched from Branch Basics to Truly Free for laundry care)

Why I love it: Truly Free is a low-tox, clean laundry option that’s powerful and practical. Shipping is free, the refills are compostable, and it doesn't come with the “greenwashed” fine print. Currently, they’re offering 150 free loads so it’s a pretty good time to try it.

What you get with the purchase of 2 X 50 Loads Of Laundry Wash for $39

The following is included for free (if you use my link until October 15, 2025):

  • Free Shipping For all USA orders

  • 3 X 50 Loads Laundry Wash Refill 150 Free Loads

  • 1 Laundry Machine Cleaner

  • 1 Refillable Laundry Wash Jug *Included for first time buyers

Truly Free laundry detergent - refillable non-toxic laundry wash

Truly Free does the job, and if you’re a mum with an active kid + cloth diapering baby… that says a lot. Unscented is available for those like me who prefer no fragrance.

🧠 PCOS tip: Most mainstream detergents are loaded with phthalates, synthetic musks, and chemical residues that cling to clothing, sheets, and towels. These compounds are absorbed through your skin—and even inhaled as they off-gas into your home.

If you’re serious about hormone health or living low-tox, Laundry Wash is a non-negotiable swap in my book because if it touches your skin daily & constantly (like clothes and bedding), it needs to be truly clean.

🧼 HOME SURFACE CLEANERS

I use: Branch Basics & Truly Free Surface Sprays
Why both? I mostly use Truly Free because shipping is free & thus more cost effective for me. I try to reserve my Branch Basics concentrate for making hand/body/dish soap!

Why I love them: Both are free from harsh chemicals and residue. Most mainstream cleaners (including “disinfectant wipes”) contain ingredients linked to endocrine disruption. Plus, disinfectants like Clorox wipes only disinfect after you clean the surface first—and most people don’t do that.

📌 Let’s be real: The claim “kills 99.99% of germs” sounds good, but here’s the problem:

They leave behind the debris of dead bacteria

The 0.01% that survive adapt and become superbugs, which are harder to kill

You end up with resistant strains, more chemical exposure, and a weakened immune response

🧠 PCOS tip: The skin and gut microbiome are connected—and over-sanitizing our environment can disrupt both. I trust cleaning products that support health rather than sterilize it.

Truly Free cleaning spray - non-toxic bathroom cleaner

At the peak of potty training, this has been our holy grail. I can feel how clean the floor is under my bare feet (:

🌿 HAIR CARE

I use: @underluna unscented shampoo
Why I love it: Under Luna is a small, woman-owned business with formulas rooted in herbalism and totally free from sulfates, parabens, synthetic fragrances, and endocrine disruptors. My scalp health improved dramatically after switching.

🧠 PCOS tip: Many shampoos contain xenoestrogens (aka fake estrogens), which can worsen hormonal imbalances. Look for simple, herbal formulas with ingredients you can pronounce and be careful of essential oils - quality is key.

✨ SKIN CARE

I use:

ClearStem YouAreSunshine SPF - clean beauty and skin protection for hormonal acne and hormone health

Should I create a follow-up post going deeper into my full skincare routine?

DM me to let me know!

Why I love this lineup: Each product is minimal, clean, and non-comedogenic. I follow the oil cleansing method nightly to gently remove dirt without stripping my facial skin’s natural barrier.

🧠 PCOS tip: Inflammatory skin issues (like cystic acne or texture) are common with PCOS. Swapping out synthetic skincare full of alcohols, drying agents, and fillers helped restore my skin’s moisture barrier and reduce flare-ups.

Final Thoughts: Swaps Are Seeds 🌱

You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. Just start with one small swap & stay consistent. Then add another swap. Repeat. I started in my laundry room, moved to my kitchen, and am finally trying to figure out how to clean my walls (lol, I didn’t know they had to be cleaned).

While food is an important piece of my healing journey, lowering my toxic load played a huge role in putting PCOS into remission, balancing my hormones, and clearing my skin.

💛 And know that healing is possible—one step at a time.
